THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI is a classic of silent cinema and German Expressionism. It has been described as the first horror film ever made. The eerie tale follows the mysterious Dr. Caligari and a sleepwalker who is under his command.
This spring, Chatterbox will accompany the film with a live soundtrack. As the film screens, our performers will provide voices, music, and sound effects to go along with the striking imagery.
Auditions are open to all, and no roles have been pre-cast. With the exception of Francis, the lead character and narrator, all cast members will perform both voice work and sound effects. Rehearsals will begin in late February and will take place in the evenings.
To audition, please prepare two brief (1-2 minute) contrasting monologues. Monologues may be read rather than recited from memory. We will be looking for your ability to create different characters -- not broad, cartoonish voices, but convincing portrayals of markedly different human beings. Auditions will consist of monologues followed by brief cold readings from the script.
Those interested in auditioning are strongly advised to watch the film, which is available in its entirety from archive.org. When you audition, you will be asked to list any scheduling conflicts you have during the rehearsal period. Casting decisions are based partly on availability, so please be thorough and honest. Once a final rehearsal calendar is set, additional conflicts will not be accepted.
